These strategies should be part of your linking "mix", and you shouldn't depend too heavily on one ot two strategies, but rather getting your links on a variety of other sites. Also, you need to combine your linking strategies with your hosting, which includes your third party hosting.
I suggest you consider the "quality" of your third party hosting, which we can use PageRank as a (very) general guide.
Let's call Squidoo, Blogger (Blogspot), Wordpress.org and MySpace "high quality" sites. You will want to build high quality links to these pages.
For example, if you have a list of 300 directories to submit to, submit these resources, as well as your own main domains, to the high quality, paid directories.
Then, create a second "tier" of directories, and submit your "second tier" (silver) sites to these resoruces.
Now take your tin sites and submit/link them to the "left over" sites. These would be your Free host sites and some of your sub-domain sites, for example.
And remember, always link "up", but rarely link "down".
This will give different linkage footprints to your different sites.
