There's an easier way...Sorry, I should have thought of this earlier...

Just wrap the description with a CDATA tag:

This will wrap all the contents in a CDATA tag and any html included inbetween the CDATA tags will be OK.

Notes:

A CDATA section cannot contain the string "]]>", therefore, nested CDATA sections are not allowed.

Also make sure there are no spaces or line breaks inside the "]]>" string.
