Pingz Official Thread

(coming soon)

Introduction

Catch the new wave of internet marketing with Pingz. "Pinging" is the hottest promotional strategy in marketing circles and is one of the major reasons for the popularity of blogs.

Many blog programs have a feature known as "ping" that automatically tells the big blog directory and search engines that a webpage has been updated. When they're pinged, they go check out the blog and index the newly updated content.

Pingz gives you the same power to get your "regular" pages pinged, too. Do you have a forum or webpage that updates frequently? Untl Pingz, you've been missing out if you're not using blog software.

Here's how it works: You tell Pingz what pages to check, how often and how much they need to change, and when ever Pingz detects a page of yours has been updated it will automatically submit the change to the world famous ping alert service Ping-O-Matic, which tells all the major blog directories and ping services about your page being updated.

And each time your page is updated, they add a link to your page in their "recently modified" links, which are often on very high PR homepages...

But the link only stays there for a very short time, as other pages are being updated and pinged, so it's essential that every time your page is updated, you get your link back to the top. This is how a great many pages get into the major search engines very quickly.

Read Me

Title: Enter any descriptive name.

URL: Enter the URL to the page you want to be pinged.

Check Every: Select how often you want Pingz to check for updates and ping. Note: Ping O Matic restricts pinging to about once every 15 minutes. Also, if your page doesn't update often, don't waste your resources needlessly by checking every 15 minutes when a couple of times a day will do.

Sensitivity: How "much" change should be made before the page is considered to be updated? 100% is the most sensitive and will detect any changes, whereas 1% would need the entire content to change. If you're pinging a page with a time stamp such as a forum(or similar), often the "number of times read" for posts will change but this isn't really an "update". Set the sensitivity accordinly...

Number of Reports: Each time a ping is made, a status page is created by Ping O Matic. You can choose how many of these past reports to save so you can review the results later.

Category: You can create a number of categories to help you organize your pings. You may want to create a category for each domain, for example, or any other method you want to use for your own organization. Note that the "Main Category"

Pinging Services: Click the link to each service to check out the TOS and focus of each resource, and whether or not it's appropriate for your pages.

Special Services: Some of the pinging services are very specific about the types of content they will accept...Again, you should visit any resource you want to ping to make sure you are within each's TOS and focus.

MISC. Stuff:

Some of the services have different time limits, such as Weblogs.com which will only accept a ping every 30 minutes. Check your reports for status messages.

Also, Weblogalot.com requries you to register your URL before pinging.

Limitations: Pingz uses Ping O Matic, which is a 3rd Party service, which means if there's an error with any/all resources, it will be up to Ping O Matic to correct and Pingz is limited by Ping O Matic. This means that not all services will available at all times, and may not be available in the future.

Upgraded Feature - 4-22-06: Proxies

Pingz 2.0 will now generate your own Ping script and upload them to various domains/IP addresses.

This allows your Pinging to origianate from different IPs and domains, incase any particular one gets blocked for some reason.

1. Click "Proxies"

2. Fill out the ftp info, so Pingz knows where to upload your pinging script.

3. Double check that the URL generated is correct, as Pingz guesses at this based on your server paths, and is often incorrect.

4. Delete any of the ping servers you dont' want to use for this Ping project.

5. Click "Add Proxie". You may want to FTP to your site and check that the php script has been installed.

6. Click back to your Main Category (or any other category) and you will see that a new proxie has been added.

Now, for each Pingz project you have some choices.

You can use Ping-O-Matic, your own proxies, or both.

If you select mroe than one, Pingz will rotate thourgh each, every time it pingz. This mixes up where your pinging originates from, for a variety of benefits.

Note: In theory, you can also customize the look and feel of your PHP script, and start your own ping service. Just be prepared for some added server strain...But it may be of use to some.

Kurt,

I got it! Have a couple of questions:

>>>Pingz gives you the same power to get your "regular" pages pinged, too. Do you have a forum or webpage that updates frequently? Untl Pingz, you've been missing out if you're not using blog software.

Do you mean I can pingz any "regular" pages? I remember I read somewhere else that I have to install XXXXXXXX on pages. Is that a must?

>>> Number of Status Reports to Keep:

Where I can find the status reports? I setup a pingz, and found
"Pingz Update Factor: 0.0%.", is it the report? What does it mean?

Thanks for your help.
Rob

Rob,

You will need to create an RSS pheed and also use an auto-discover tag. You can do this a number of ways, including a method used "somewhere else" or popular blogs.

I would appreciate it if you didn't mention private strategies on public forums and instead refer to "somewhere else".

In this case, it means the page checked hasn't been modified, as the 0% refers to percent of modifications. 100% is when a page is completely dofferent than last time.

Once a page is modified it will be pinged, then the reports will be visable.

For more info, please refer to the "other resource"...Thanks...

Thanks very much for your quick reply

Let's say I installed wp on domain.com/blog/, may I just add auto-discover tag and add a rss logo with link to wp rss feed on homepaage? Is it OK? Or I must create RSS pheed for the page I want to ping?

By the way, could you please tell me the purpose to create an RSS feed? So I will know what content I should include in RSS feed if I do this via "somewhere else" method.

>I would appreciate it if you didn't mention private

So sorry
If I got any questions, should I asked here or "other resource" ?

Thanks again!

Most blog software will do this for you, but may not Pingz the RSS pheed.

The reason to create RSS pheeds is because that's what's being "pinged". Pingz submits your RSS pheed to RSS engines and directories (via Ping O Matic), much like search engine submission software submits pages to the major web search engines.

RSS is used for updates, so instaed of sumbitting 1000 pages, you submit one pheed and when it is updated, the pheed is "pinged" so your updates are picked up by all the RSS resources.

Yes, please post on the other source, as Pingz hasn't been released to the public yet and much of this has already been posted.
