"Sandboxie?"

I posted this elsewhere and got zero replies...

Sandboxie is a virus protect program that works in a different way than all others. It creates a "space" on your hard drive (a sandbox) and runs certain programs, like browsers, from that space.

Anything installed in that space is confined to that sandbox on your hard drive. So, if you run IE in that sandboxand pick up a virus, that virus can't leave the sandbox.

Here's where it is extremely valuable: If you have BooknarkingDemon, Autopligg or even SocialBot, anything that auto-posts to Pligg, Scuttle or similar sites, you are at EXTREME risk of getting viruses, spyware, etc.

These sites use scripts that are easy for hackers to break...Then the hackers install all sorts of bad stuff on your hard drive.

Sandboxie doesn't allow for any changes to your regular hard drive...It only allows changes in the "sandbox", which you can delete at any time.

Set your browsers and programs like BMD, AutoPligg, SocialBot, even DirectorySubmitter to run using Sandboxie and you're well on your way to being well protected while you, or your programs, surf the web.

I haven't tried Sandboxie first hand. I'm relying on what Top Hat Bob has told me, who I trust a lot on matters like this.

If you run similar type progras, or surf the web a lot, I stongly suggest you try Sandboxie. It's free for a month, then only $20.

The only downside I could find when looking at reviews is that it slows down your browers.

i wiil ry this. but the biggest trade off is speed and security. if it slows down the speed too much, then that will hamper the work.

but while running autopligg type of tool, i see kaspersky blocking the sites warning viruses.

Thanks JD...

One thing to consider is the "cost" if Kaspersky (or NOD 32 for me) doesn't catch a virus.

I'm going to try it and use if with programs like BookmarkingDemon and Autopligg.

   Thanks for the heads up.

I hadn't thought about it for use with things like SocialBot, ArticlePostRobot, etc, but what you say makes good sense.

All The Best,

Tony

This type of software is a must. An antivirus program by itself is not enough. I recently had a job that frequently brought me into contact with infected web sites. Since I wasn't using Windows, I was not afraid to download the malware. I usually submitted them for analysis (at virustotal.com), and often only a few antivirus programs detected them. Occasionally, none of the antivirus programs detected that the file was infected.

BTW, I know of two other programs that are similar to Sandboxie:

GeSWall
www.gentlesecurity.com

DefenseWall HIPS
www.softsphere.com
