"The Google News Experiment"

LAST EDITED ON Jun-02-10 AT 03:21 AM (PST)

I've been busy working on creating a site to submit to Google news and have it almost ready to go.

I'm looking for people who want to write news stories in exchange for links and Adsense exposures.

I have a WP blog set up to rotate Adsense with "authors" and will give you 60% of the exposures to start. If more people join and contribute, I'll increase the percentage authors get.

You'll also get some great linking opps and we'll work out the best way to approach this.

In exchange, I'll do the SEO, submitting, pinging, bookmarking and linking, etc, so all authors have to do is write. I'm also putting together special research resources and we'll share keyword tips, etc.

There's no guarantees the site will be accepted as a news site, and even if it is, it isn't a sure thing you'll make money.

However, I am very loyal to those that are also willing to take some risk and not wait for a sure thing.

I've stocked the site with press releases and now I need some original, timely/newsey articles to add before submitting to Google News. Everything else is about 98% ready, just need short original articles (200 words...Some longer).

I will have a few guidelines that need to be followed to a tee so everyone is on the same page...And we have to find and add a LEGAL photo to use for each article. I am working on getting a stock collection to make this easier for us.

If you're interested, email me at lvha@aol.com . I want to give Bombers first shot before I open it up to others.

   Hi Kurt,

What is timely/newsey, to you?

And what kind of lengths are you looking at?

I am doing a JV with a small local radio station, and one of the things I am working on is writing and rewriting articles with an eye on web and marketing solutions.

Not sure if that quite fits.

Because of time, i had put away thoughts of submitting articles of local news, but as a chamber member I often find myself at local events that could be news.

Grandopenings, celebrations, contests, etc.

Hey Kelvin and All...

This is based on a recent WSO that's getting good reviews, as well as a report from Planet Ocean from a couple of years back. Both concern creating and being accepted as a Google news source.

Here's the theory...Google wil index your new articles and list them highly in the Google SERPs in a very short time, like 10-30 minutes for even very competitive keywords.

The drawback is, as a news site, your article will only rank for a short time, depending on other news stories for those keywords, it may only be for a few minutes. However, the claims are that you can get a lot of traffic in this short time.

So it's an ongoing deal: You write a keyword friendly news article, put some adsense on it and make $50-$100 per hour. (That's the claim of the WSO, not mine, and what I want to test.)

In addition, it's a great way to get a link indexed very quickly. The author suggests getting authors based on this alone, as a linking benefit.

I've added the Adsense share plugin as added motivation.

>What is timely/newsey, to you?

Examples:

No: Jimi Hendrix was a great guitar player.

Yes: A new Jimi Hendrix album was just released containing remixes and never released songs.

No: 10 Tips for Diabetics

Yes: Scientists discover vitamin lowers blood sugar.

No: How to refinance a home

Yes: Obama (congress, senate) signs bill to offer aid to help people in default of their mortgages.

Keyword selection is a big deal, according to the author and he gives these numbers as the CPM for his topics:

Legal 40.00
Banking and Finance 30.00
Medical Treatment 20.00
B2B 15.00
Miracle Drugs or Vitamins 15.00
IT Hardware 15.00
Jobs 12.00
Technology 10.00
Education 10.00
Medicines 10.00
Science 8.00
Automobile 6.00
Webmaster or Hosting 5.00
Fitness 5.00
Consumer Durables 5.00
Hotels and Travel 4.00
Dating 4.00
Social Networking 3.00
Fashion and Clothing 2.00
Music 2.00
Gaming 1.50
Sports 1.50
Breaking News 1.00

The above are based on getting 1000 people to a page. It doesn't factor in that some keywords may be 10X easier to get traffic.

However, I've collected a bunch of RSS pheeds for each topic to use in the Newz Tuel.

>And what kind of lengths are you looking at?

200 words minimum. But would also like to see some longer articles, when the content writing "flows". I have some formatting that must also be applied, as well as finding a graphic. So add 5-10 minutes for each article. I'm in the process of adding more legal stock photos for the "money" topics, which will speed things up quite a bit.

   Thanks for the explanation.

I do have a couple of ideas, one i will keep to myself.

But the other is ESPN is bringing their bass fishing tournament here.
So, i can write on local economic boost, or record bass caught in Arkansas River...

Thanks for the clarification

I'm definitely happy to contribute - I can pull together 10 stories or so quite quickly based around a variety of niches.

One thing I like about this idea is that it's very suitable for outsourcing - assuming the overall strategy is profitable.

The sticking point for many is how to make a topic 'newsworthy'.

Here are a few quick ideas (feel free to add):
- product launch
- local interest
- opinion on news item
- poll results

These can be mix and matched (i.e. poll result on new gadget launch - will people buy x?).

The latter two I'd have to do some testing with, but I can imagine using a load of 'off topic' forums (preferably private/unindexed) to ask people's opinions on news stories (or indeed almost any topic) to provide the majority of a news story that pushes public opinion. Mechanical Turk might be another cheap way of doing it.

Polls could be tackled in a similar way, or via a free service like Ask500, and the results also have an immediate newsworthyness.

Thom

Hey Thom,

>One thing I like about this idea is that it's very suitable
>for outsourcing - assuming the overall strategy is

This is my concern. All the positive comments are about being accepted as a news source. No comments at all about actually making money.

I'm almost ready to submit the site. Right now, we just need news articles, like about the BP oil spill, sports news, celebrities, etc. just to be fresh.

And at least 3 new news stories need to be added daily until the site is approved. This could be a few days or a few weeks, so I need to make sure we're committed before we begin.

I also need to let everyone know there won't be any Adsense on pages until we're approved...

I'm going to try to get everything else in order within a couple of days, then begin writing...

Hey Thom, Kelvin and All...

Here's some RSS pheeds I collected based on what the author says are the best paying keywords.

I think you'll find these are great research sources for relevant, valuable topics.

Just create categories in Newz Tuel (or your favorite RSS aggregator) and add the pheeds.

Hey Graham, Thom, Kelvin (and anyone else interested),

I should be about ready to go.

I just need to write up the directions, which I'll to Tues. PM (my time).

Then, the first step is to get accepted. I need about 5 articles a day (combined) from us, for at least 3 days and maybe up to a couple of weeks.

Until we are accepted, we'll write about news topics in the following categories:

Business & Finance
Computers & Technology
Health & Fitness
Shopping & Travel
Sports & Entertainment

Once we're approved, we'll regroup and take it from there.

Hi Kurt:

Just read through this thread. Very interesting...

I am starting out on the same experiment in Wordpress.

How is yours going?

I will update my progress here.

I am sorry that I missed out on your offer. In any case, have you applied to Google News?

Charles

Hey Charles,

We were all ready to go, I posted my articles for the first day and never heard from the other guys since.

So, I put it on a back burner and started another project which is taking longer than usual (as always).

But, the news site is next on my list. Without others helping me write, I need to make sure I can devote my focus to the project. Formal writing like that doesn't come easily for me.

But you're a good writer, I think you'll do really well. Any tech stuff is a one-time hurdle, it's the ability to crank out decent, news-worthy article in profitable niches that will be the key.

Do keep us posted...I'm really only intested in the bottom line profits, and any possible linking benefits.
