"Free Hosting"

LAST EDITED ON Oct-20-07 AT 08:05 AM (PST)

Power of Free Hosts - This includes all types of free hosts, blogs, sites, things like MySpace, etc.

Sure, it's "best" to have your own domain, IF you are only going to have one site and don't want to take advantage of some of the benefits fre hosting and blogs can give you

Free host sites can be considered "authority" sites. However, in general if you want the benefits, then the host should use sub directories, not sub domiains.

- They give you fast and easy access, nothing to install.

- They are free and save on hosting fees. They also save on domain names.

- You get access to a variety of IP addresses
Power of Free Blog Hosts

Some Important Notes

They can be gone tomorrow - So back up and diversify. Don't put essential info on free hosts. Even Google owned Blogger may lock up your blog for whatever reason.

Many of the free services are actually the same service, using the same servers, IPs, DNS, etc. I'm going to have Top Hat Bob run an IP check on the free hosting sites as soon as he can.

Free hosting sites often require you to log in via FTP every so often, usually once a month. If you don't, you lose your account, even if your site is getting traffic. We'll learn to automate this in the months to come.

   I have a quick question....

I've never tried free hosting. Can we use Fatty and BlogBomb on something like this?

Also, what is your experience with free hosting if you did use one?

Thanks...

I suggest converting Fatty pages to static pages using HTTRack, then uploading to a free host. Also, ZZ Tuel is better for this than BlogBomb. We'll cover ZZ in coming months.

I use free hosts as just a way to get some easy links from other IPs. Free hosts are just part of a good over-all linking strategy.

Hmm...that sounds simple enough. I should have thought about it before I asked that question.

Btw, I use ZZ all the time so I know a little about it...enough to do something like you are talking about.

Lol, I guess I will be using free hosting.

Thanks...

Hi Mary and Everyone...

IMO, here's how you should look at the free hosting, as well as many of the free resoruces listed on the Web 2.0 Resources thread...

Let's say you put up sites on 10 different free hosts, and each site has 50 pages, and you'll put 20 links to other pages of your's on each page...

Let's do the math:
10 x 50 = 500 pages x 20 links each = 10,000 link opportunities.

And this is the entire point of using all the free resouces...To build your own link network.

If you add in some blogs for pinging and trackbacks, squidoo lenses, etc, you will be building your own linking network where any time you build a new domain, you can get it indexed in no time flat, with a bunch of links already pointing to it.

Next month as we get into RSS, we'll show you how to set this up and automate much of it.

It will take some time and effort, but for those willing to put in the work, you'll be able to conquer just about any long tail niche, as well as some more profitable niches, simply by using your own link/indexing network.

Think about this again: 10 free sites with 50 pages each and 20 "self links" is 10,000 links. We want to get up in the 100,000's and can, using free hosting and blog networks and we won't have to pay a penny for domains or hosting.

This is what the master SEOers do...This is their secret.

I am just posting out loud.

This is something I was thinking about for my own uses. Maybe it will jog something for someone else.

First my free hosting will in large part be outside of the IM arena.

For example I have a site about scuba diving. Beginning scuba to be specific.

So, my next step was to determine what type of free sites to use.

In this case I am choosing, actual free hosting, to start with, not community sites.

Next: What kind of data to use?

So, so many choices. Well, I settled on speed, so for me I can use other peoples data. I am going to use blog feeds (rss) from other scuba sites. Tuelz helps me to automate this. But, it can be done in other way. Such as grabbing free articles about scuba and adding 20 free scuba articles to the free hosting site.

You know, I just happen to have another site about vacation cruises. I might be able to tie in these new sites to also point to my cruises site. Now maybe I can build that site about vacation destinations, that the cruises are going to.

Just thinking out loud.

I still need to work on what links I want to add to these sites. Such as should I interlink between them or should all of them link to my scuba site only. Or just add the same menu of 20 of my other sites to each of the free hosting site.

Oh, I know, I should look at the thread Kurt posted about hub sites.

blue_sky,

I think you will be closer to automating linking once things are set up more than you realize if I'm reading Kurt's post correctly. You won't have to hunt down so many other owners with similar sites.

Kelvin,
Are you trying to be a bit sarcastic here lol?

>Oh, I know, I should look at the thread Kurt posted about hub sites.<

Or was it one of those V8 moments?

Incidentally, that hub post of Kurts has all kinds of stuff in it. He's one of the few that actually tell you useful stuff.

Thanks Kurt!

Hi Karsten,

The "secret" in this sense is building the huge linking networks...Automation is part of the bigger concept.

Kurt,
thanks for the answer!
So talking about free hosting accounts there might be around 300 with FTP access available which could be used with ZZ.
Some articles and related RSS feeds should give the expression that this is a "real site".
The good thing here is that links could be easily changed and added via replaces etc. (since the templates are on my HDD)! I am not sure about using archive or not!
Is this the correct way?

But how to exploit the other free blog sources properly.
Just add an article/link and then move on to the next source...??

Hi Karsten,

Exploiting blogs, especially free ones is my specialty.

Posting articles and links is the easiest way to utilize these blogs. There are a couple good tools for automating posting to any WordPress or Blogger blog (free or paid hosted).

I have tested most of the auto posting type programs and plugins on the market and have made some modifications to my favourites.

I'll be looking for beta testers in a couple weeks. Free hosts are unique in that they have interesting ways of monetizing their sites as well as limit ways of accessing the control panel. Most of which interfere with any automation tools.

I recommend using the archive feature of ZZ.
Just watch it depending on the size of your hosting account.

But in general, you can set archive to just add a page a day, week, etc. So, it could add 52 small pages a year, which should be OK for any hosting.

This just helps to build your site on auto pilot.

Thanks Kelvin...

ZZ Tuel will be a featured program that we'll focus on for a month. I'm not sure which month, but it is definately in the plans.

ZZ lets you select the dates of the month to "work", so you can modify/make pages on just about any schedule.

The thing about ZZ is that it is a desktop program so that your free hosts don't need php or a cgi-bin, as all the work is done on your PC. This means you can add RSS to pages without having to install scripts. This also takes much less server resources, which free hosts appreciate.

Since all the pages are on our hard drive, then uploaded, we can do all sorts of advanced SEO on them, "enmasse".

Anybody have luck with the free host http://free-ftp.org?

I ran a name check and the chosen name was available. I then registered (twice) and recieved a message that no registrations are available.

Either they are just collecting peoples information or they do not have anymore free hosting.

Best to make accounts while you can and keep them active.

Here's a possible footprint to help you locate some free hosting services:
http://www.google.com/search?q="Powered By Layered Panel"&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-US&ie=utf8&oe=utf8

The keywords are:
Powered By Layered Panel

Layered Panel is a script that allows one to give away free hosting. Try the keywords in various search engines, not just Google.
