"More Blogbomb RSS and XML resources"

Here are a couple more resources we could use with blogbomb.

Moreover has an xml search engine. The results are xml so we can put them in blogbomb for whatever topic we want. It even provides the code for us to include the search engine on our own hosts.

http://w.moreover.com/categories/xmlsearch.html

Here is an excellent resource which converts google(!) news feeds to rss. Just fill in the search with your keywords and put the resulting rss url in blogbomb. The code is public domain and provided on the site so we could use it on our own hosts as well.

http://www.voidstar.com/gnews2rss.php

Enjoy!!

Ron,

MoreOver is so-so. They only display the links, without any descriptions.

But the Gnews2RSS/VoidStar.com script is really cool!

The first version didn't work on my server, but I did get the cURL version (whatever curl is) to work.

I strongly suggest BlogBombers get this installed and working on one of their domains. I'd take the programmer at his word that he may not offer the service for long.

One word of caution: Anytime you querry Google, you could be at risk of having your IP address banned by them. I suggest that you change the cache in BlogBomb data/config.pl to only querry Google every 3-10 days or so. We're only looking for words, not up-to-the-minute news, as there's plenty of sites that do this better.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, but I wouldn't have 100's of feeds, all on the same IP, updating every day.

Remember, if you have 10 feeds, that's 150 "headlines", and if you use the "random" function of BlogBomb, you have a ton of unique combos. And 10 feeds updated every 10 days in only one per day, average. I doubt that will get you into any trouble with Google, but just be aware of the risk.

Also, the script has a parameter where you can set the number of search results. I suggest pumping this up as high as you can. If you need to querry Google, you may as well get as much content as you can with each querry. Although I have tested it a little to show 100 results, but the script seems to limit to 15...This could be on Google's end and not the script itself. And, I haven't tested it for very long.

All in all, this is a terrific addition from Ron, although it has probably put a "damper" on Jason D's Google News project.

Actually, while I'm nearly ready with my part of the mission (simpsons and southpark), i've put up a test page combining Blogbomb and Gnews2rss.

Look at the column on the right...

   Kurt and everyone,

If anyone wants more relevant results from the gnews2rss program, they can go into the code and modify the url to sort the news headlines by relevance instead of by date (currently the default).

Note: Make a backup copy of the php file just in case something gets messed up

Look for the line in the php file that looks something like:

"$url = "http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&num=$num&scoring=d&q=";.urlencode($q);"

remove the portion that reads &scoring=d so that it looks like this:

"$url = "http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&num=$num&q=";.urlencode($q);"

This will sort the results by relevance, thus displaying more results that contain our keywords!!

   Hi Everyone,

I found eBay2RSS News Feed

Blogbomb RSS for you to generate eBay search results
using this eBay2RSS. The draw back is that they carry
the owner CJ affiliate id for ebay.

I think we can find a way to load our cj affiliate cookie first.
Any expert for CJ Affiliates can help us ? (Kurt, Tasari, Deb, Phil, Kirk or others ?).

http://www.ebaygeeks.com/DesktopDefault.aspx

Hi Kurt,

I noticed that blogbomb random feature would select randomly
from different channel. Is that a way to limit the random for
certain channel only.

If not possible, could we install another blogbomb with different
name so that we can segregate blogbomb only for news, only for tips,
only for product and others possibilities so that our random page content more structured.

Yulianto

HI. I think we can use multiple copies blogbombs. I tried it and seems to be working fine.

My question is, does blogbomb update the feed automatically, or do we have to do it manually? I set it up for random newsfeed from several sources, but it shows only old news. I thought it puts the data in cache for one day (default) then update it. If it doesn't do that automatically, can we use cronjob for that?

Thanks for your help.

   Yulianto,

This is pretty over my head, but I think even if you did load your own cj affiliate link first into the page, the credit for sale may go to the link that is clicked on and that would be the guy's page. I'm not sure about this but often it's the LAST click that overrides the other affiliate's cookie- at least for some affiliate programs...

I have also made a copy of blogbomb to separate the random results. But I think if we could control the results with only one copy, it would save on server space.

Jae,

Remember, you are still at the mercy of the news source...Just because BlobBomb updates the cache doesn't necessarily mean that the news/blog has been updated.

BlogBomb will "update" itself automatically...

Here's another RSS search:

http://www.blogdigger.com

Plus these other two already posted:
http://www.feedster.com
http://www.daypop.com

I like using the search engines' results more than just using a single feed.

Without much research, you can take a feed URL such as:

http://www.blogdigger.com/rss.jsp?queryString=PIES&sortby=rel&days=30

And easily just change the keyword to:
http://www.blogdigger.com/rss.jsp?queryString=CAKES&sortby=rel&days=30

-OR-
http://www.blogdigger.com/rss.jsp?queryString=ICE CREAM&sortby=rel&days=30

Here's the base URL's for these three RSS feed engines:

http://www.blogdigger.com/rss.jsp?queryString=keywords&sortby=rel&days=30

http://www.feedster.com/rss.php?q=keywords&sort=&ie=UTF-8&limit=15

http://www.daypop.com/search?q=keywords&s=1&c=15&ext=true&t=a&o=rss

Note: Just change "keywords" to your words. There are other variables you can mess with, but this will cover the basics.

If you add three or four feeds from each of the above (for different, relative keywords), plus throw in a few Google News feeds, and maybe a little Ebay, you'll have a lot of content to mix and match.

Let's say you come up with 20 feeds, 4 each from Ebay, Google, Daypop, Feedster and BlogDigger...

That's 80 feeds total, each displaying up to 15 feeds each.

80
x 15
-----
1200 total headlines that will mix and match.

Think about a deck of cards that has 52 cards and how many different hands there are.

You can have many different "pairs of aces":

Acehearts/Acediamomds
Acehearts/AceClubs
Acehearts/AceSpades

Acediamomds/AceClubs
Acediamomds/AceSpades

AceClubs/AceSpades

That doesn't even count that each of the four aces has 48 other cards to be "paired" with.

And that's only the two card combos....

Now think about how many unique "hands" our deck of 1200 cards has?

With 1200 unique headlines, you could easily have enough "unique" content for 100 pages, at 12 headlines per page, while never repeating a single headline.

But since we are randomizing the results, in theory we could go much, much higher than 100 pages, and each page uses the EXACT SAME Bomb SSI tags, yet will appear unique.

But we can also randomize the number of feeds on each page. Some pages have 5 feeds, others have 25 feeds and most in the middle.

Then factor in that these feeds are "fluid" and are ever-updating. If you had a couple of hundred pages, by the time the last pages were indexed, a great deal of the content of each headline will have changed (replaced is more accurate), as compared to the feeds on the first pages indexed.

Is this an example of what you are looking for?

I use something like this for a random call..haven't tried changing
random=1 so I don't know what that does

<!--#include virtual="/cgi-bin/blogbomb/feedsearch_ssi.cgi?random=1&results=4" -->

I use something like this to call a specific feed

<!--#include virtual="/cgi-bin/blogbomb/feedsearch_ssi.cgi?channel=user-7.xml&results=5" -->

Don't know if that is what you are wanting, but that is how I do it.

BTW...The program Kurt recommended early on...winm8.com ...is
almost a necessity for collecting all of the tags and such as
that... if you haven't tried it take it for a spin.

Rick, I was saying to myself "never heard of that program", but it's the old "Classic Clipboard" renamed.

I can't live without it, I have all my ssi tags, DomBom "form letters" and even a few html templates stored in the thing.

It is kind of "clunky" at first, but if you spend 20 minutes just messing with it, you'll understand it completly.

You can copy up to 9 things into your "clip board" at once, and it has a good "filing" system for stuff you want easy access to.

Also, if you learn how to resize it, it becomes very versitle.

It has a 60 day free trial, but I think it is a tool any serious web person needs.

I agree 110%

>>I can't live without it, I have all my ssi tags, DomBom "form letters" and even a few html templates stored in the thing.

I have all my SSI tags , all readme's for the different bombs,
web templates, and keyword lists', and any other text I need handy now or I may want to refer to in the future.

>>It is kind of "clunky" at first, but if you spend 20 minutes just messing with it, you'll understand it completly.

I downloaded it as soon as I read your post way back when....tried it out...didn't understand it...deleted it.

Down the road I ended up with about 20 txt files on my desktop for easy access
to the Bomber SSI tags and such then said, "wait a minute, there has to be an easier way!"
Downloaded it again and "Took the Tutorial" step by step.
You know, when all else fails...read the instructions.

>>You can copy up to 9 things into your "clip board" at once, and it has a good "filing" system for stuff you want easy access to.

The 9 clipboards are a great feature, but for me the filing system and the insertion of text from winm8 to where you need it in what you are working on at the time is what really makes the program indispensable.

When I received Gil's excellent ImageBomb the first thing I did is put his read me in winm8, then the basic calls. Now as I collect SSI tags for posters I will use again, boom, in they go...name them to something I recognize...and they are handy for my next use.

I even collect posts from the forum that I know I will need to refer to later.

Thanks to turning me on to it!
Rick

Thanks Rick that was exactly what I was looking for. DUH!

Regarding winn8 I downloaded when Kurt first mentioned last year I think. I couldnt get it- it was to complicated for me- so deleted it. I like real simple stuff.

I was sent a link to another multi-clipboard program a few months back. So I downloaded and installed. Then I got viruses up the wa-zoo. My system crashed, I lost almost all data. I almost had a breakdown, man am I a PC junky!!! Anyway, I stilll have the problem of creating a million files on my desktop as short cuts but then I forget what they are for and wind up recreating the file anyway.

I downloaded winn8 again, and again I delted it. BUT IT NEED IT FUNCTIONS. I think this time I will download it and force myself to learn it. I mean its costing me time and money not having it.

DUH!

I know, it hurts being dumb. Could be why I'm always in pain.

Gil

This one organizes press releases in a directory format, if you want to browse by topic, instead of searching by keyword.

Pretty good resource.

Actually I tried to get into the official "BlogBomb Installation" thread but something is not working with that link. So I hope this is in the right thread.

I am just starting to work with BlogBomb and seem to have it installed properly, but still having some problems understanding the basics.

First of all in BlogBomb there appear to be three required fields. Title, Link and Url. Yet in the RSS feeds there only appear to be Title and Link. So my question is, what is the url supposed to be?

Thanks

I had to go back in the pages of this forum, but I found it in the post listed as "BlogBomb: Daypop.com". It was one of Kurt's first posts on the BlogBomb idea. It gave more details on using the XML resources.

Here is the url...

I hope this helps

   Hi Kurt;

I just put it up and it works like a charm!!! I used the "curl" version as you mentioned.

Anyone know of a YahooNews version? I believe Yahoo may be further ahead than Google on RSS feeds as I thought I read somewhere that they encouraged webmasters to use their feeds. This would eliminate the possibility of having a site banned. Along those lines, would you suggest putting this script on a separate server from all of our other sites?

This whole RSS idea really is incredible as Kurt has explained. The possibilities of using it in email etc are endless.

One thing that I was interested in was your post on the warrior forum of the Blogless Blog. I would love to see a more detailed explanation of that in this forum.

Thanks again to Kurt and everyone for all their help.

Here is a link to Yahoo news RSS feeds:

http://news.yahoo.com/rss/

I haven't seen any form of search
capability there though.

You wouldn't use a gnews equivalent
with these Yahoo feeds. Gnews
"scrapes" after a news keyword search.

But if you're happy with the more
generic content the Yahoo feeds
offer, you can use them with Blogbomb.

After a little digging, I found that Yahoo
not only offers the news category feeds I
noted above, but also has a news search feed
in beta.

Check it out:

http://search.news.yahoo.com/usns/ynsearch/categories/47/index.html?p=your-keyword-here

Just substitute your keyword(s) where it says your-keyword-here above. For a phrase, be sure to use the sign. Examples:

one word p=dog
two words p=dog food
exact phrase p="dog food" ( is a space, quotes required)

This is the equivalent of the gnews script
for Yahoo, except Yahoo is providing it
directly. Hope they keep it!

Best,
Jeff

Thanks a bunch, Jeff. It works great. There does seem to be some irregularities, such as the <b> tags not working. Not sure why that should be the case, but a very good feed when you can't find too many blogs on your subject.

With regards to this Yahoo news feed, I note that the HTML in the feed seems to not be working quite right. If you go to www.HarleyXchange.com/index1.html you will see the Yahoo feed on my site. Note that the HTML tags show up. <b> for example and &, etc.

I am wondering is I have done something wrong or if this is a problem with the feed? I have noted this on one of Kurt's sites as well, but I can't remember which one. Do you think that this would affect the SE crawlers? What I mean is, will they still see the keyword that is between the tags or will it index the keyword as <b>investing</b> which would do me little good?

Thanks for all your help.

   All,

I have converted the PRWeb search engine into a newzbomb. You can add these to your newzbomb directory by downloading the zip file and copying in the 2 php scripts.

http://bonose.com/newzbomb/prwebnews2rss.zip

PRWeb also offers specific feeds which are listed in this thread.

Here's a simple online RSS generator.

Just fill in a few blanks and it will generate the code for you, then you just need to:

copy/paste into a text document
save as YourPheed.xml
upload to your site

I used it to create my pheed for pheeds.com:

Now we don't have to use trovenews2rss.php in newzbomb anymore.

I can't figure out how to limit the results to a certain number. It seems to return everything it has, which can take some time.

   Hi blogbombers,

I've found a 4th blogsearch engine that provides a feed for your keyword search

- you already know about
Blogdigger
Daypop
Feedster

- now you can add WAYPATH to the list
http://www.waypath.com

The good thing about Waypath is that your search feed can either be for the most relevant ('best') or most recent ('new) feeds.

The feed format is:
http://rss.waypath.com/query.xml?qs=blogkeyword &mode=best
OR
http://rss.waypath.com/query.xml?qs=blogkeyword &hours=24&mode=new

If your using pheedsearch.cgi, I suggest you add Waypath to it - the more choices we all have, the better

Thanks Isobel...

Leigh, I was checking out Waypath, and they have a pretty cool tool called the "Buzzmaker".

It lets you enter 5 keywords and it will create a graph of the popularity of each keyword/phrase.

While the "Buzz" isn't search engine content, but it does add some interesting content for your visitors and could "fill up space" when you need something, anything, when trying to make a page.

I am wondering if anyone else has noticed the odd problem with Yahoo's news feed. That is, it displays the html tag rather than the actual html output.

For example if you go to http://harleyxchange.com you will not that the keywords (which should be bold) have a /<b>/ in front and after.

Has anyone figured out a way to eliminate this problem? It is not a BlogBomb problem as other feeds do not do this, so it must be something special about the Yahoo feed.

Thanks

   Hi Phil,

I have just visited your page and yes I can see what you mean with the tags appearing within the feed on display. But I couldn't really tell you why this is, as I have just checked my front page and the yahoo news feeds are displaying correctly.

SeeČ
http://www.computerbe.com

Look at the news feeds at the bottom and just hover over a few until you see it is a Yahoo news feed. You will see they are displaying properly.

So I am puzzled why your isn't:(

I am now using BlogBombX, so maybe like you say this could have something to do with it.

It is worth upgrading anyhow just for the NewzBomb scripts you get and the multiple XML feed input.

Let us know Phil how you get on:)

Phil,

It doesn't make any difference. This is why the Newsbomb scraper scripts are "experimental".

I do know that Godfatherbomb strips all bogus characters.

Ok, I'll admit it,

You guys are far, far ahead of me with this RSS thing. I have BBX and GFB installed, have an idea of how I might utilize both, yet, have run into an interesting problem from the stand point of an 'RSS beginner.'

In the simplest of terms you can bring yourself to write, HOW and WHERE do you get your feed info?

I've gone to several of the sites listed here in this thread and put in my search topics and got nothing back but pure, unrelated junk!

When (and IF) I find something I want to 'include,' what part of which do I 'copy' to put into BBX? I don't understand the XML page when it pops up. It's total jibberish to me.

Yes, I'm a bit of a 'dufus' when it comes to this stuff. I'm learning as fast as I can. I just need someone to point me in the right direction using simple English.

I'm confoozed! LOL Thanks,

John

I'm just getting started with BlogBOMB and was experimenting with the Google News Feed. Does anyone know how to strip out the reference to the script that seems to be showing up at the top of my results for all queries?

John,

Phirst things phirst. It should be spelled:
conphoozed

There will be a spelling quiz next Monday.

And, to answer your question:

You're looking for XML/RSS pages.

Newstrove is my new favorite...

1. Go to www.Newstrove.com

2. Search for: parrots
This is the direct link:
http://newstrove.com/cgi-bin/search.pl?search=parrots

3. Look for the little orange button that says XML and next to it is:
RSS News Feed

4. Clicking that link brings up the RSS pheed for your results.
Here's the URL for the PHEED:
http://newstrove.com/cgi-bin/rss.xml?search=parrots

This last URL is what you want to enter into BBX.

But, if you want to be quicker, you can take that "base" XML URL and just change parrots to lions

Basically, for NewsTrove, you can take a bunch of links like this, and just change "parrots" into other keywords:

http://newstrove.com/cgi-bin/rss.xml?search=parrots
http://newstrove.com/cgi-bin/rss.xml?search=parrots
http://newstrove.com/cgi-bin/rss.xml?search=parrots
http://newstrove.com/cgi-bin/rss.xml?search=parrots
http://newstrove.com/cgi-bin/rss.xml?search=parrots
http://newstrove.com/cgi-bin/rss.xml?search=parrots
http://newstrove.com/cgi-bin/rss.xml?search=parrots

For NewsTrove and most others, remember to use a instead of blank spaces:
http://newstrove.com/cgi-bin/rss.xml?search=amazon parrots

Note: News sources don't have the "depth" of standard searches. I don't think "amazon parrots" will update everyday, or even every week.

Also, everyone should do a little research first...

-Boom boom boom boom.

Kurt,

You're getting me in the habit of saying THANKS waaay too much. LOL

Now I understand how to find and use that one important item that's been eluding me. Maybe working with me, and others, you or someone could come up with a "Primer" for we beginners that are
CONPHOOZED!

Now, I can get to work on making a BBX/GFB 'work of art' on Mexico...manana. LOL

Thanks again,

John

Andy,

For the "uninitiated," what does "Uninitialized" mean in your script?

John,

It just means that you haven't requested or received any information from that resource.

Hi, I was interested in the Amazon RSS pheed links you gave but I was not sure where to put my amazon affiliate id to benefit from sales when using the Amazon RSS pheed links. Any idea how to include your affiliate link in the pheed link?. Would like to test it out.
thanks

Eleesha
